Two-factor authentication (2FA)

Two-factor authentication is an added layer of security designed to check that the person accessing an account is the person that they are supposed to be. It does this by asking the user to complete two different types of verification, hence its name:

• The user enters their username and a password (something you know)
• The user must provide another piece of information (something you have)

This second factor can come from a variety of sources, depending on the technology available to both the user and the system that they are accessing. Typically, this could come from one of the following sources:

• Email
• SMS
• App
• USB key
• Handheld token
• Biometric scanning
• Voice recognition

The aim of this is to increase the security of your account and protect your identity and information, as even if your password is compromised it is unlikely that the same person will also have your phone or access to your email account.

Hop uses 2FA to protect your user login and we provide the ability to use it in one of the following methods:

• Setup Two Factor Authentication (2FA) on your account using your email
• Setup Two Factor Authentication (2FA) on your account using a 3rd party app on your device

If you choose the first option, an email will be sent to you containing a six-digit code that you will need to enter onscreen. If you choose the second, you will need to install an app on your phone or tablet (e.g. Google Authenticator and Authy are two examples of this, but we have not limited this to a particular product) which will generate a six-digit code. In both cases, the code is temporary and must be used within a set amount of time otherwise it will expire.
